Working with Pace Communications, Jay launched a new in-room magazine, Navigator, for Holiday Inn Express. Its cover motto: "Leave the towel, keep the magazine."

Aimed at road warriors who pay their own expenses, Navigator conveyed a sense of heroism for the traveler who makes his own way--while keeping a playful, page-turning, picture-filled tone. One of the highlights: every issue had the president of Holiday Inn Express, John Sweetwood, drive a different vehicle ranging from the hottest sports cars to the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile to a Zamboni. Sweetwood credited the magazine for one of the marketing innovations that had him promoted to president of all Bass Hotels, including Crowne Plaza, Intercontinental, and Holiday Inn.
